In 1894, cattlemen in Kansas discovered there was safety - and power - in numbers, and the Kansas Livestock Association was born. Now, over a century later, Kansas cattlemen still are banding together to protect their livelihood. The association continues to serve members by fulfilling its mission to:
"Advance members' common business interests and enhance their ability to meet consumer demand."

VILSACK LISTS PRIORITIES FOR USDA New USDA Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack held his first formal news conference last week, providing an overview of the issues and initiatives he considers to be priorities. The list included quick implementation of the farm bill, advancing biofuels research and development and further addressing major environmental challenges, including climate change. Vilsack said USDA needs to make sure the biofuels industry has the necessary support to survive recent market challenges, while promoting policies that will accelerate the development of next-generation biofuels. He intends to promptly implement the Farm Bill’s energy and conservation provisions and embrace the Forest Service as a new opportunity to engage in climate change mitigation strategies. In addition, he plans for USDA to lead efforts to encourage management practices that promote and provide clean air and water, and help farmers and ranchers participate in markets that reward them for sequestering carbon and limiting greenhouse gas emissions. Other priorities Vilsack has on his agenda are supporting the profitability of farms and ranchers by providing a safety net for all of agriculture and enforcing the Packers and Stockyards Act, modernize the food safety system and combating childhood obesity through enhanced health and nutrition programs. |
